National Family Caregivers Month: Gadgets Every Caregiver Should Know About

Caregiver in Vienna VA

November is not only a time to think about the food you will get to eat at Thanksgiving, football, or the cooler weather, but is also National Family Caregivers Month, which is the perfect time to show appreciation for the family caregiver in your life. Whether you are the caregiver or know of someone with this role, being a family caregiver is a special job that can be both rewarding andCaregiver-Vienna-VA stressful at times. Since you are most likely not able to spend every waking moment with your loved one, you may feel a bit of anxiety and worry over not knowing what your aging parent is doing at all times. Even if they are receiving in-home care from a trained professional, the thought of someone being able to care for them better than you is preposterous. Fortunately, in today’s technology-obsessed world, there are several gadgets that will make you feel a little bit more relaxed when you are not by your loved one’s side. The Huffington Post published an article that discussed the top five tech tools every caregiver should be utilizing, which includes the following gadgets.

A smart phone for seniors
The average smart phone can be difficult for older adults to use because of the abundant apps, buttons, and features available. Samsung created a smart phone known as the Touch3 that was designed with both the elder and the caregiver in mind. This device has a GreatCall app pre-installed on the phone that will give the elder immediate access to health and safety services with the single touch of a button, while also letting the caregiver know where their loved one is, what she is doing, and if any emergency calls were made to 5Star. It will give the caregiver peace of mind knowing that their loved one is safe.

A device for the deaf
Seniors who receive elder care most likely are on a sleep schedule to make sure they wake up and go to bed at the same time each day. For seniors who are hearing impaired, hearing their alarm can be a challenge. A portable digital device called the TCL Vibe is a small cube-shaped alarm clock that has a vibrating wristband and extra loud ring in order to make the elder knows when it is time to wake up. This device is also very helpful for those people who are deep sleepers and need a little extra help waking up.

Assistive devices
To help your loved one regain their independence, having assistive tools around the house will help. For example, if they have a physically disability that makes it difficult to reach for items off of a shelf, a reacher, or a pole with a claw at the end, will allow elders to get the item they need safely. The devices do not have to be high-tech, but should be able to assist your loved one so that they are able to do some tasks by themselves.
