Caregiver in Fairfax VA: Those Frozen Meals Aren’t Doing Anything to Help Your Health as a Caregiver

March is National Frozen Food Month and as a busy family caregiver you may not have much time to take care of yourself like you used to. One of the things you may be doing, often without thinking twice about it, is consuming an abundance of frozen foods.

It may even be fast food that you’re focused on.

If you are consuming an excessive amount of fast food or even frozen meals, the kind you purchase from your local supermarket that come in boxes and you can probably heat within a few minutes in your microwave are not going to offer very much nutritional value.

These are processed foods.

The more processed food is, the less healthy it will be for you. Not only will it contain very little nutritional value, it may even contain some harmful preservatives and other additives, maybe even the kind that are designed to help make it palatable.

It may be easy, but it’s not healthy.

You may have very limited time in your hands to prepare healthy meals. As a family caregiver, maybe you’re taking care of an aging parent or other loved one, you simply don’t see how you can possibly find time to help them eat healthy and then take care of yourself.

So, as you are rushing around throughout the day you probably grab fast food or, when you go shopping for your loved one, grab a few frozen meals for yourself. After all, you are in pretty good health right now, so what’s the problem?

Over time, it can be a major issue.

The average family caregiver in the United States right now is 48 years of age (Forbes). 80% of caregivers are women. As you head towards your 50s or maybe you’re even going through your 60s, your health becomes even more important. If you are not giving your body the nutrition it needs, you run the risk of dealing with serious health issues.

What can you do about this?

When you consider the value of a home care aide to help, it can give you time you need to focus on not just a better diet, but exercise, enjoying things you have given up in life, and much more.

This month, think about the foods you’re eating. If you have a tendency to consume too many frozen meals or eat fast food more frequently than you’ve used to, sit down and talk with your loved one about relying on home care support, at least for a few months. That can help you take control of your health once again.
